ATYPICAL || Advice from Zahid

Webp.net-gifmaker

Atypical is one of my favorite shows that not only spreads awareness of autism, but the characters are written very well, and each of them always has a flaw, especially the mother who is too protective of Sam Gardner. He’s a high school student that overcomes his struggles as an autistic person, and despite the many appalling reactions towards him, there are few that treat him like any normal human being.

I especially love this one character named Zahid; Sam’s best friend. He’s a little….eccentric when it comes to his sexual tendencies towards girls, but what makes me love him is that he treats Sam as normal, and willingly stands up to people for discriminating Gardner’s autism.

He’s the kind of friend who will be there at the perfect time, and I hope people aspire to be like Zahid.

BEING AUTI || Screaming

Screaming

They’re very common around the mind of autism, especially being triggered by minor things (noise, taste, or change of routine). An emotional breakdown that involves screaming and sometimes hitting. It’s not easy calming them down, especially when they’re still a kid.

In this case, Tim has a phobia for balloons, the loud pop is very unsettling especially against the ear. (I hate it a lot too :|) He’s just really scared, unfortunately others don’t understand just as much as his brothers and mom.

Anything that may calm an autistic person could be a certain texture they like, an interest they love to distract them from their meltdown. Tim loves anything nostalgic and fluffy, like Mr. Bunnington!

BEING AUTI ||Sexuality

sexuality

Autism =//= childish, especially as they grow up into adulthood. I mean yes, they do have child-like traits, and seek comfort within nostalgic objects and memories, BUT this doesn’t mean autistic peeps do not have sexual tendencies; they have can be as heterosexual, bisexual, gay, asexual, etc as any other human being.

For Tim’s situation, for those who don’t know, he’s demisexual; a person is not sexually attracted to anyone unless there’s a strong emotional foundation. Ever since Rich and Tim started dating at the beginning of sophomore, of course he wants to ask questions in order to make Timmy feel comfortable.

Tim certainly doesn’t mind any further intimacy and I think Richie’s…Richard doesn’t seem to mind either-

BEING AUTI || Hypersensitive Taste

Hypertaste full comic

Every autistic person has different sense of taste buds; some would prefer soft foods and despise anything crunchy; anything liquidy would be nice but not so much sugar, it all depends! For our Timtam, he doesn’t love anything that is too hot(unless it’s warm enough but he’s very picky), and doesn’t like his food to be soft. He loves crunchy/chewy intakes with funky tastes like; it’s why he loves cheese dip with yummy fresh cut up carrots and celery served cold!

And when he loves the food he won’t slow down-

BEING AUTI ||Hypersensitive Touch

Hypersound

There are certain textures that autistic people really despise, and can get really aggravated; Don’t try to automatically change their mind :T

Tim doesn’t like anything that not only seemed so shiny, but also really smooth like silk. So Benji decided to take his little bro feel better with a stuffed bunny to calm him down! For any of you who already knew Timothy loves stuffed plushies, well this is how he got Mr.Bunnington in his favorite texture; cotton  u v u

BEING AUTI || Hypersensitive Hearing

loud noises

Not everyone likes the clanging of utensils, or crowded areas; it’s a common emotion! But to people with autism their senses are a lot more heightened that it can be extremely irritable. Timothy Kleinman is diagnosed with autism; he loves video games, unfortunately arcades are very limited even though he wanted to stay. The noise would cause emotional distress, which to autistic people is called a meltdown. While such symptoms can be overcomed, it takes a long time.

Luckily, Rich Goranski(Be More Chill) is a very supportive boyfriend, and knows exactly how to calm him; letting Timmy feel the texture of the rough, died scars(For the fire) while Rich continously tries to stay calm.

I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback how accurate the representation has been! I mean, I’m still learning but it’s nice to know I’m doing something right, especially since a lot of these symptoms are very over looked, and I would like people to be more mindful about autism.
